There have been a few heart wrenching topics floating in the magic community, 2 of the common topics are: exposure of trade secrets and copy cat magicians.

Apparently for Turkish magician, Doruk Ulgen (a David Blaine look-a-like), copy cat magicians affected him in many ways. A public video was made addressing to David Copperfield, Jeff McBride, Pen&Teller and Mac King — the main magicians that his competitors have successfully copied the original acts without the creator’s permission and have since soared stardom on local programs such as Turkey’s Got Talent.

Such copyright issues are tricky as the productions are not as big like international shows like Cats – The Musical, The Phantom of the Opera or Les Misérables.

At ATOM we believe in original scripting, original choreography and original personality. Believe us, it will bring BIGGER success. Just look at David Copperfield, Jeff McBride, Pen&Teller and Mac King. They made their millionaires with magic — which they 100% deserve.

Now most bookers/agents may not be aware of this but customized shows and out-of-the-ordinary performances will most likely stumble a copy cat magician. We encourage bookers/agents to support REAL talents by hiring REAL performer (we use this term because copy cat artiste doesn’t just limit themselves to just magic). Yes, they may charge a higher rate and it will be awarding.

Lunar New Year Magic (Is Lu Chen quitting magic?)

Happy Lunar New Year! We had lots of fun during the new year with our new act featuring a Chinese Magic Mask Changing (aka Bian Lian 变脸) and Lion Dance.

Speaking about Chinese New Year, the most raved about and watched Chinese New Year show, CCTV New Year’s Gala (中国中央电视台春节联欢晚会), was missing Lu Chen. Replacing him was controversial magician Yif Magic (a.k.a. the magician that uses special effects to achieve his illusions). CCTV New Year’s Gala is a yearly event that is broadcasted before the Lunar New Year (a.k.a. Chinese New Year, Spring Festival) on cable/satellite TV channels: CCTV-1, CCTV-4, CCTV-9, CCTV-E, CCTV-F, and CCTV-H. The broadcast has a yearly viewership of approximately 700 million viewers. Thus, making it one of the premiere television events of China. In 2014, it has reached an estimate of 800 million viewer. WOW. Congratulation Yif Magic on your big break.

So the question is… what happened to Lu Chen? China Daily reports that Lu Chen might be “has grown hesitant of performing because his illusions lack proper legal protection”.  “The Spring Festival Gala is my largest challenge, not the content, but the performance itself”, says Lu Chen. Compared to David Copperfield, “anyone who leaks the secrets” that is involved in his magic performance “will be liable for huge financial damages”.

For years now, magicians have been battling with magic exposure and ownership. As Rick Lax mentioned, “in the field of magic, theft is rampant. Close-up magic wholesalers steal from close-up magic wholesalers. Parlor manipulators steal from parlor manipulators. Large-scale illusionists steal from large-scale illusionists. Why do they do it? Because they can.”

American Hypnotist Dr. Scott Lewis Fall To His Death —

Known as “The Hypnotist” of The Illusionists 2.0, Dr. Scott Lewis is a doctor, author and stage hypnotist. Recently, Lewis was reported to have fallen to his death at The Goldsborough Mort where the cast/crew of The Illusionists 2.0 are currently staying for their Australia tour.

The cause of his death is still unknown.

Mind Reading Robot

Technology these days have been easing our work. For some cases, technology have taken over a person’s job. Whatever the case may be, there are some jobs that technology can rule over, such as, a pilot, a programmer, a priest, a painter and even a Psychological Illusionist (a.k.a the mentalist).

I was wrong.

Stuart Nolan invented a robotic mind-reading bird which he calls IdeoBird. The mind-reading premise or the principle that IdeoBird use is Ideomotor (an automatic motion response cause by our unconscious mind). Thus, the name IdeoBird (duh!). How accurate is it? 100%.

Psychological Illusionists have been using this psychological phenomenon to their advantage to find hidden objects, lost items and missing persons. Looks like they don’t need us now that have IdeoBird.

Singapore Event: Lion Dance

Engaging Lion Dance has been long tradition for as long as I know. Despite being being an auspicious thing and not to much very loud. The banging of the drums, gongs and cymbals can be very melodic. It attracts all races and all ages.

Lion Dance is colourful and exciting and is used in Chinese culture to mark an important event like Chinese New Year, Chinese festive season, Wedding, a Business Opening or simply something new.

Although Lion Dance and Dragon Dance are somewhat similar, most people in Singapore prefers to hire Lion Dance in comparison to Dragon Dance. Hired Lion Dance fits in ALL events, more animated and looks “realistic” since it looks like a large size moving puppet whereas the dragon during the Dragon Dance is operated by long wooden poles.

Telekinesis Discovered in Bangkok, Thailand

Telekinesis an alleged psychic ability allowing a person to influence a physical system without physical interaction.

Do you believe in Telekinesis? Check out an amateur footage shot in Khaosan Road in Bangkok, Thailand. In the video you will see a busker floating objects. Under close scrutiny of the crowd and the videographer, they concluded that there was “no cords, no wires and no magnets”. Soon his cup was overflowed with tips. When asked how it was done, the busker pointed to his head and heart. Classic.

Real powers or not. That was a remarkable performance.

Hypnosis Goes Wrong On The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Hypnosis, real or not, some people are skeptical about it whereas some are believers firmly vouch its amazing phenomenon of the mind. “The awakening of the human mind” is how I would describe or define hypnosis. Surprisingly it is SAFE and FUN if executed by a trained professional. One of the most common forms of hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis and one cannot be hypnotized against ones will.

So how if hypnotism goes wrong?

Obvious we know this can’t be real as John Krasinski is actually an actor and not a hypnotist. It is highly unlikely such a thing will happy or go wrong. However there are times where the hypnotist may have not have de-hypnotized the subject properly but fear not the effect usually fades off after 2-3 hours (on average).
